There is intense lobbying to replace the resigned Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama who resigned from office suddenly yesterday, 25th September 2024.
The company is said to be pushing for an insider to take over the job rather an “outsider” appointed to manage the state electricity company.
The staff of the Company which is organized into a Head Office with a Managing Director, supported by three Deputy Managing Directors say they prefer one of the three deputies to be named to manage the company in the interim.
Others are of the opinion that one of the eventeen (17) Directors of the various directorates of the ECG , preferably an Engineer, could be tapped to takeover in the interim.
Of the insiders, Ing Jacqueline Ofori-Atta, a director of Engineering of the ECG is said to be favoured among others named.
Among the outsiders for the job include daughter of Chief of Staff Frema Opare, Maataa Opare the Fidelity Bank Staff accused of conflict of interest in Forex trade between the ECG board on which she serves and her employer, Fidelity Bank which sells Forex to the power company at rates experts queried.
Others include Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, an Ashanti regional NPP politician who serves on the board and who is likely to face the same problem Dubik Mahama faced if appointed.
Staff of the company are said to be ready to agitate and make the company ungovernable for any outsider MD in this crucial weeks to the election.
Mr. Mahama the outgoing MD tendered his resignation after two years in office as managing director of the company having faced several controversies.
His resignation letter addressed to the board of the ECG gave two weeks notice citing personal reasons for the resignation and thanked the board for the working relationship.
But insider information indicated massive in-fighting over the control of key departments and operations of the ECG for which some elements serially undermined the authority of the MD.
His vision of building an incorruptible state company was said to have led to clashes with some internal stakeholders.
Mr Mahama’s fight against corruption and graft using digitalization tools in collaboration with the office of the Vice President was aid to have been badly received by the staff of the state company.
It will be recalled that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in May 2024 exposed some ECG staff who deliberately undermined the government’s efforts to digitalize revenue collection processes.
Mr. Mahama leaves a legacy of a robust revenue collection drive at ECG as intense lobbying starts to replace him.
