During a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign and Regional Integration, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reflected on his leadership role in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), acknowledging both the achievements and challenges that marked his tenure.
Speaking at the official commissioning of the ministry’s new office complex annex on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, the President highlighted one of the most difficult periods in recent history: his leadership of ECOWAS during the COVID-19 pandemic and the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war.
“Leading ECOWAS through the pandemic, alongside the severe impacts of the Russia-Ukraine war, was undoubtedly one of the most difficult periods in recent history,” President Akufo-Addo shared with attendees.
His words carried weight, not only as a reflection on his leadership but also as a testament to the resilience of the ECOWAS community in navigating one of the most challenging global crises of the 21st century.
For many, the pandemic was a time of uncertainty, with borders closing, economies faltering, and health systems stretched to their limits.
For Akufo-Addo, leading a regional body like ECOWAS through such turmoil was no small feat. The President described the challenges as unprecedented, particularly as the effects of the pandemic collided with the geopolitical and economic ramifications of the Russia-Ukraine war.
“We were dealing with two crises simultaneously—one that affected the health of our people and the other that crippled economies and food security. It was a test of leadership for all of us,” Akufo-Addo explained, speaking with an air of resolve.
