NDC’s super-majority could weaken their influence in parliament – Afenyo-Markin

During his appearance on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed his concerns about the potential challenges the National Democratic Congress (NDC) might face with its expected supermajority in the upcoming Parliament.

“I am watching the NDC’s growing majority with a keen eye,” Afenyo-Markin began. “While many would see it as a triumph, I have my reservations.

Having too many members in Parliament may end up diluting their effectiveness. There’s a fine line between strength in numbers and spreading your resources too thin.”

Afenyo-Markin pointed out that some MPs might struggle to balance their parliamentary duties with their local mandates as constituency representatives.

“If they try to serve two masters, it will only weaken their position in Parliament,” he warned. “Being spread across both roles could lead to inefficiency and may even cause their influence to wither.”

He also reflected on the rise of the NPP’s downfall, cautioning the NDC to avoid complacency in the face of their supermajority.

“We saw the same thing with the NPP in the last elections,” he continued. “There’s a risk that they could become too comfortable with their numbers and forget the real work of governance. We can’t afford to be blinded by the numbers alone.”

Afenyo-Markin further emphasized the importance of staying grounded in effective governance despite the strength in numbers.

“Having a majority does not guarantee success.

In fact, it could be your undoing if you’re not careful. The NDC must ensure that every single member, whether a veteran or a newcomer, knows their worth and stays focused on the job at hand.”
