Stop defacing public road infrastructure with unauthorized advertisements – Roads Minister cautions

Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso Boakye has cautioned all persons who take to posting unauthorised advertisements and notices on public road infrastructure across the country to desist from the practice.

“It has come to our (Ministry of Road and Highways) attention that public road infrastructure across the country is being defaced by unauthorized advertisements and notices.

“This includes the indiscriminate installation of outdoor advertisement structures such as billboards and signposts on medians and at intersections, as well as the posting of notices on road signs and traffic controllers.

“These practices not only contravene regulatory provisions, but also compromise road safety, diminish the aesthetic value of our public spaces, and lead to misinformation for road users,” Francis Asenso Boakye said in his address at a ceremony to commission the Flower Pot overpass on Tuesday, 19 November 2024.

“I urge the Advertising Association of Ghana to enforce its code of conduct on outdoor advertisements and call on Assemblies and the Ghana Police Service to work collaboratively with the National Road Authority to ensure compliance and preserve the integrity of our road infrastructure” Asenso Boakye further stated in his address.

Flower Pot overpass

On the Flower Pot overpass, the Roads Minister indicated that the project includes a “802-meter viaduct extending from the Palace Mall Intersection with Martey Tsuru Road over to the East Legon Boundary Road, and a Ramps from Shiashie towards Tema, providing seamless connectivity across the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA).”

He added that it also Includes “a newly constructed road through the old tunnel in East Legon towards the Airport direction and a road from Giffard Road Overpass through the Cantonments area, dedicated walkways and cycling lanes, promoting safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists and lay-bys to support public transportation along the project route, and other essential elements, such as drainage, signage, and crash barriers.”

“Beyond enhancing mobility, the facilities were strategically designed to support local businesses and
generate employment opportunities. The Flowerpot Interchange will enable seamless connectivity between key
areas—such as Osu, La, Cantonments, Tse Addo, East Airport, Ledzokuku, East Legon, Adjiringanor, Adentan, and Madina—thereby stimulating economic activities and providing safer routes for commuters.

“The project, which was funded jointly by the Government of Ghana and a facility from AfreXim Bank was constructed by Messrs. China Railway No. 5 Engineering GH. Limited and supervised by Messrs. Deoke Limited on behalf of the Department of Urban Roads,” Asenso Boakye remarked.

“I am happy to say this project has been completed to the highest standards and specifications upheld by my ministry. Today’s project is part of a broader vision.

“Other similar flagship projects aimed at improving the overall road network are also progressing steadily and will soon be ready for all Ghanaians. I want to take this opportunity to reaffirm my Ministry’s commitment to improving the overall condition of roads across the country,,” the Roads Minister further remarked.
