Asaase Radio’s North East regional correspondent, Dokurugu Alhassan, has emerged as the GJA’s 2023 Northern Region Best Reporter in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.
The award ceremony organised by the Ghana Journalists Association came off in Tamale in the Northern Region on Saturday (14 September).
The event was under the theme, “Ensuring violence-free elections: the role of the media”.
Out of over 50 talented journalists from the three Northern Regions (North East, Savannah, and Northern Region), Dokurugu Alhassan was among the eleven exceptional nominees who received awards for their outstanding dedication and hard work in the media.
Alhassan’s award-winning article, “Residents of Langbinsi Urge Authorities to Relocate Dumping Site,” showcased his exceptional storytelling skills and commitment to media advocacy.
The piece highlighted the pressing health risks faced by the Langbinsi community due to an unattended dumping site and urged authorities to take swift action.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) awards committee recognised Alhassan’s tireless efforts in shedding light on critical issues affecting the community, solidifying his position as a leading voice in responsible journalism.
Alhassan expressed his gratitude for the award and pledged to continue expanding his reach in the media landscape while upholding the principles of responsible journalism.
“I am thrilled to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for being honoured as the 2023 Northern Region Best Reporter in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. I look forward to tackling new challenges and striving for excellence. I hope to win more accolades in the coming years,” Alhassan said.
“I extend my sincerest gratitude to my loving family and esteemed senior journalists who have offered invaluable guidance, encouragement, and support throughout my journey,” he added.
Since joining Asaase Radio in June 2020, Dokurugu Alhassan has consistently demonstrated his passion for impactful storytelling and dedication to excellence in journalism.
Alhassan received an HP laptop, a plaque, and a commendatory citation.
The Northern regional chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Yakubu Abdul Majeed, delivering the keynote address at the event admonished journalists to uphold the sacred principles of journalism.
He emphasised the need for responsible reporting and fact-based storytelling to ensure peace and stability in the country, particularly before, during, and after the 2024 elections.
“Tonight, we gathered here to celebrate the excellence in journalism. As we approach the 7 December general elections, let’s reopen ourselves to responsible reporting, facts-based journalism and pursuit of truth,” Abdul Majeed said.
“I wish to reiterate to my colleagues that we should move away from what I call protocol journalism,” he added.
