She was neutral under NPP, now she’s not—Afenyo-Markin slams clerk’s conduct

Alexander Afenyo-Markin has openly criticized the Clerk to Parliament, accusing her of partisanship and unprofessional conduct.

The Minority Leader expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of neutrality in the clerk’s dealings in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show.

“We expect the Clerk to Parliament to be professional,” he asserted. “Don’t force me into what I am not going to do. We complained about her conduct.”

When asked whether he had called for her dismissal, he did not hesitate to confirm. “Of course, we don’t want her there. We’ve said it. Even on her status, I’ve printed it for the boss. She will be insinuating. A civil servant should not act in a certain manner, yet even on her status, she will be insinuating.”

According to Afenyo-Markin, the clerk has not acted neutrally, especially when handling minority concerns. “Is she a neutral clerk, or is she a partisan clerk? Madam, I won’t be cowed. We’ve been in Parliament since 2013. The Parliamentary staff know—if there’s anybody who stands for their rights, I do. If there’s anybody who respects parliamentary staff, they know I do.”

He alleged that the current administration had influenced her conduct. “She was a clerk when we were in government. Ask her if she was behaving the same way then. So, when the NPP was in power, she was neutral. When the NDC is in power, she is showing her colours.”

Afenyo-Markin revealed that discussions were ongoing to resolve the matter. “The Clerk to Parliament is engaging me. I pray that we get a good outcome and leave this matter behind.” However, he remained firm on his expectations. “At the very least, we expect professionalism. At the very least, we expect her to follow the practices we all know.”

He further accused the clerk of failing to engage the Minority side appropriately. “She does not engage us. As we speak, I am hearing there would be some vetting today, but throughout the weekend, my phone has been on, and we don’t have any notice.”

The Minority Leader also criticized delays in sharing crucial vetting documents. “When they place the advert in the papers, they don’t even share a copy with us. When we get a National Security report, she won’t send it to us.” He claimed such practices undermined transparency in parliamentary procedures.

Calling for fairness, he challenged the clerk to reflect on her actions. “Ask her, she’s a Christian—she should be honest.”
