Seven Communities in Berekum East protest over deplorable roads

Residents from seven communities in the Berekum East Municipality of the Bono Region staged a peaceful demonstration Friday (16 August) to protest the deteriorating state of their roads.

The affected communities, Mpatasie, Perpase, Akrofro, Yaw Kwang, Kotaa, Ampenkro, and Domeabra, rallied together in Berekum to draw the attention of the government and city authorities to the poor and dusty conditions of their roads.

The demonstrators carried placards bearing messages such as “Fix Our Roads Now”, “No Roads, No Vote”, “Our Roads Look Like Galamsey Sites,” “Why Are You Punishing Us?” and “We Also Pay Taxes.”

The protesters marched to the Berekum East Municipal Assembly, where they presented a petition to the municipal chief executive, Kofi Agyei.

Alexander Ameyaw, the youth leader, highlighted that the poor condition of the roads severely hampers transportation and poses a significant safety risk to road users.

“Roads riddled with potholes and erosion contribute to frequent accidents, and the challenging movement of goods and services is stifling economic activities in our communities,” Ameyaw emphasised.

He also warned that residents of the affected communities would not participate in future elections (7 December 2024) if their roads were not repaired.

“Despite numerous appeals to address the situation, we have seen no tangible results. We are giving the government a one-month ultimatum to fix these roads, or we will be forced to take further action,” Ameyaw stated.

Receiving the petition on behalf of the municipal chief executive, deputy Berekum East coordinating director, Adams Amoako, assured the protesters that their concerns would be relayed to the appropriate authorities for swift action.
