The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has made significant strides in its corporate social responsibility efforts by conducting comprehensive maintenance work on a KNUST substation, which had not seen major upkeep in over four decades.
The initiative, carried out by the Ashanti Sub-transmission team, took place near the university’s Unity Hall and included the installation of a new battery and rectifier to enhance the substation’s protection, control, and indication systems.
The maintenance work is part of ECG’s broader commitment to improving the reliability of electrical supply to educational institutions and communities. During a meeting with the Director of Maintenance at KNUST, Ing. Peter Fletcher, General Manager of Ashanti Sub-transmission, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative.
“As a corporate citizen, ECG has realized that about 85% of our engineers and non-engineers are being trained by this institution. It is essential for us to give back and ensure that their facilities are well-maintained,” he stated.
“We are committed to fostering a strong partnership with KNUST and will explore further collaborations to enhance the university’s infrastructure and ensure the safety of its electrical systems,” Fletcher assured.
In addition to the substation maintenance, the Ashanti East and South line maintenance teams took the opportunity during the downtime to fortify the network leading to the substation. They diligently repaired and reinforced all the jumpers on the line, ensuring a more robust and reliable power supply to the campus.
The initiative has been met with appreciation from KNUST’s administration, recognising the vital role ECG plays in supporting the university’s operational needs. The collaboration not only enhances the infrastructure but also demonstrates ECG’s commitment to community engagement and sustainable development.
