A Nigerian gamer has set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest video game marathon playing a football game.
Oside Oluwole, also known as “Khoded,” managed to play continuously for 75 hours, surpassing the previous record of 50 hours set by Englishman David Whitefoot in 2022.
The 24-year-old, a qualified biochemist who currently works as a car dealer, undertook the gruelling challenge to raise money for a local hospital in his hometown of Ijebu Ode.
Unlike previous record holders who played FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) (now eFootball), Oluwole chose the mobile game Dream League Soccer 2023, which he connected to a TV screen.
According to GWR rules for ‘longest marathon’ records, participants are allowed five minutes of rest per hour, during which they can eat, sleep or use the toilet.
Oluwole played over 500 matches during his record-breaking attempt.
Speaking after his achievement, Oluwole said, “I really enjoyed myself playing for 75 hours straight with just some hours of rest. It wasn’t an easy task, but I must say it was all fun.”
“It was such a great moment; the event was very interesting and I’m grateful to God that it was successful.”
The gamer cited Chef Hilda Baci, whose record-breaking cookathon captured the nation last year, as an inspiration.
Seun Adesanya, a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, congratulated Oluwole, saying, “The Guinness World Records [title] is a testament to Mr. Oluwole’s dedication, determination, and the countless hours of practice he invested in mastering the game.”
“His achievement stands as an inspiration to all aspiring gamers and an embodiment of the unyielding spirit of determination that drives our nation.”
Oluwole now hopes to set more world records through playing football video games, including titles such as FIFA and eFootball.
