Sheick Umar Ibrahim has defended the warm reception given to newly appointed ministers, stating that it is part of building a positive work environment.
In an interview with KMJ on Joy News, he acknowledged that public servants should make new leaders feel welcome.
“Those who are welcoming the ministers, it is not out of place. You must welcome them in an environment where they should feel comfortable and at home,” he said.
However, he cautioned against excessive praise-singing and unnecessary hero-worshipping, referencing past instances where former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta was treated with undue reverence.
“What happened when the former Minister of Finance was at the Ministry of Finance? A
fter delivering some abysmal public addresses in Parliament, he would return to the office to be welcomed with bouquets of flowers and praise singing. That is complete fancy and bootlicking,” he criticized.
Del Ibn Sheick Umar further urged public servants to support the new appointees by sharing their expertise and institutional knowledge rather than just engaging in ceremonial fanfare.
“Don’t forget that some of them have institutional memory. They’ve been there for 10 or 15 years, so they have in-depth knowledge of what is going on in those ministries.
They have to cooperate with the incoming minister because if they don’t, he is already bound for failure,” he advised.
He concluded by encouraging workers to focus on productivity rather than optics, stating, “We must encourage an ambiance that allows ministers to succeed, not just a one-day show of love.”
