Mass deportation reports exaggerated – Ablakwa sets record straight

Minister-Designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed reports that 6,200 Ghanaians are set to be deported from the United States, clarifying that only 156 individuals face imminent removal.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Ablakwa stated, “There have been publications that about 6,200 Ghanaians will be affected by the mass deportation by the United States.

“But from the brief that has been shared with me from the officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they allay fears that the numbers are not that high and that currently, the official communication the ministry has received from Washington DC is 156, not 6,200, which face imminent deportation,” he added.

Since President Donald Trump resumed office in January 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified its operations, resulting in the arrest of over 4,500 individuals in the first week alone.

This surge is part of a broader initiative targeting undocumented immigrants, with a focus on those involved in serious crimes.

Notably, a recent operation in Chicago, dubbed “Operation Safeguard,” led to the detention of 956 individuals over a weekend.

This effort was part of coordinated raids across multiple cities, including Tucson and Denver, aiming to apprehend high-value targets such as criminals and terrorists.

These actions align with President Trump’s campaign promise to implement mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

The administration has set ambitious targets, aiming for 1,200 to 1,500 daily arrests, though these numbers have yet to be consistently achieved.
