Mahama couldn’t have managed COVID-19, says Akua Amoakoh

Akua Amoakoh, a member of the national communications team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has lauded the Nana Akufo-Addo administration for its management of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking on The Forum on Saturday (21 September) on Asaase 99.5, Amoakoh argued that former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, would not have handled the crisis as effectively.

Amoakoh said the current government demonstrated humility and focus during the pandemic, contrasting it with what she described as the “arrogance of power” during Mahama’s administration from 2012 to 2016.

“We didn’t exhibit the arrogance of power that we had to contend with between 2012 and 2016,” she stated.

“We sat down and said, Look, this is a problem. How do we fix it? How do we make the lives of our people better while we get out of this?”

Drawing comparisons with other African nations, she said, “Sometimes when I’m on social media and I see what’s going on in Nigeria, what’s going on in Kenya, I’m like… and looking at how our government has handled the situation.”

“We didn’t come and tell you all manner of things about being dead goats and about no magic.”

Amoakoh added that if Mahama had been in power during the pandemic, Ghana would have faced a severe crisis.

“We didn’t say because of that (COVID-19 pandemic) we are not going to pay teachers. We didn’t say because of this, we are putting a freeze on public sector employment,” she stated.

“So can you imagine if this thing happened during the time of John Mahama? We would have all died. It would have been a very serious situation because this man did not have all of these obstacles and yet he drove us straight into a ditch,” she concluded.
