Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, announced that the government intends to introduce free dialysis to cut the struggles of people suffering from kidney-related diseases.
“Nananom, we have improved the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS. We have invested a lot of money into the scheme to ensure that a lot of illness such as childhood cancers can be covered by the scheme. Through the NHIS, children with the sickle cell disease can now access the medcation, Hydroxyurea for free. Kidney dialysis is very expensive and patients cannot afford. We took the bold decision to cover the cost for patients under 18 year and 60 years above. Now we have taken this decision to cover the dialysis cost for every Kidney patients effective December 1, 2024. We will also procure new dialysis machines to make this process successful”.
The government has walked the talk, as free dialysis will be instituted on December 1, 2024.
Currently, 20 hospitals will run the programme across the country, with 10 regions tabled for free dialysis treatment.
The free dialysis treatment is expected to cost between GH¢20 and GH¢57 million, annually based on the prevalence rate.
The launch of the initiative followed a meeting between the NHIA and heads of the various hospitals and dialysis units participating in the programme to see how to run it seamlessly.
