Langbinsi dumpsite cleared after Asaase Radio exposé

Residents of Langbinsi in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region are breathing a sigh of relief after the relocation of a refuse dump that had threatened the community’s health for years.

The dumpsite, which was perilously located at the market square, had long been a source of concern.

Parents feared for their children’s safety as the unsanitary conditions posed a risk of cholera and other diseases.

The foul odour and swarm of houseflies also made life unbearable for food vendors and market traders.

The turning point came when Asaase Radio highlighted the issue in a broadcast and online publication, urging the municipal assembly to take action.

The response was swift. The refuse dump was cleared, and the site was levelled, much to the joy of the community.

“As of now, each and everyone in Langbinsi, we are very happy and we are grateful that that area has been cleared,” said Iddi Abdul Rashid, a resident.

“It was a very serious thing with respect to health issues but now we are rest assured that if not any other different thing but that place is well solved.”

Rashid expressed the community’s appreciation, noting that the intervention had renewed their faith in seeking help through media advocacy.

“We thank Asaase media for their concern and the zeal or the mind of developmental plans they have for Langbinsi.”

Yakubu Abdul Karim, a butcher in the area, echoed similar sentiments. “The health aspect, everybody in the community was concerned about that particular place. It was all about health issues and right now we are relieved.”

Even local authorities applauded the collaborative effort. Abdul-Kabiru, the Assemblyman for Langbinsi, described the cleanup as a milestone for the community.

“We are much delighted. If you come to look at the site, everybody is very very happy about it, so we appreciate the work of the district assembly, and we are grateful to them,” he said.

“Asaase, they have also shared the information and it went far, so we are also grateful to the Asaase media.”

The transformation of the site marks a new chapter for Langbinsi. With the dumpsite relocated, the once-polluted area now offers a safe and sanitary space for market activities, ensuring the health and well-being of residents.

This story is a testament to the power of community action and media advocacy, bringing about meaningful change where it’s needed most.
