600 new books arrive at Ashanti Library as Bridges Family, Aprella Natural Mineral Water step up literacy efforts

Bridges Family USA, an international charity organisation has joined forces with Aprella Natural Mineral Water and ‘MMOFRA HEADQUARTERS’ in Ghana to donate 600 books—valued at GHS 30,000—to the main library in Kumasi the Ashanti Regional capital.

The donation is part of a broader initiative to promote literacy and provide better educational opportunities in the region.

In addition to the books, the philanthropic group also supplied a large quantity of socks to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), reinforcing their commitment to community support and the promotion of a reading culture among students and the public.

The collection of reading materials features titles such as Great Women of the American Revolution by renowned author Brianna Hall, among other educational resources.

At the donation ceremony held on Saturday (1 February) Madam Aprella Bridges, owner of Aprella Natural Mineral Drinking Water and the representative of the benefactors, reiterated the group’s dedication to aiding impoverished and underprivileged individuals, particularly children.

She explained that their mission extends beyond literacy to include significant support in education and healthcare across Ghana.

“Basically, this foundation wants to help Ghana improve itself as a whole. And it can only start with the children. We are trying to inculcate into them the importance of changing Ghana for the better and how can it change, through reading and getting to know the world around us. We are also into healthcare. I have helped people with medical bills, and I have helped a lot of children with their school fees,” she said.

The NGO also urged the government and key stakeholders to step up efforts in refurbishing libraries like the Ashanti Regional Library by supplying additional reading materials and modern tools, including computers, to foster a more conducive learning environment.

“For his part, Mr. Ofosu Frimpong, Ashanti regional librarian, expressed his gratitude for the initiative, noting that the donation helps bolster government efforts to promote literacy among children. He also called on other organizations to contribute resources and support the modernization of library infrastructure, especially in this era of Artificial Intelligence, to improve both learning outcomes and the skills of library personnel.

“The government is supposed to provide our books and every six months you have to change them. And the cost of books is expensive, we feel great when donors donate books to our libraries to augment what the government is doing. The government alone cannot do it. We are most grateful to Ms. Aprella for donating over 600 books worth of over 30,000 Cedis.”

He added, “I will also appeal to the public to come to our aid, and this is the regional library, so our patronage is very huge. The support can be furniture, computers, other equipment to renovate this building and we will greatly appreciate it.”

Some patrons at the event also voiced their appreciation for the donation, praising both the foundation and the library staff for their efforts in creating a nurturing environment that encourages reading and learning among children.

“My kids love this place. It is very conducive, and when they come around, they explore the books. We are also grateful for the good work the authorities are doing here. We are also grateful to the foundation for this initiative. They should keep doing the good work in helping children grow brilliantly, and one day, their names will be mentioned”, a parent said.

“The books here at the library are excellent. The place is very conducive, and I know if I study here, I will pass my BECE.I really thank Aprella foundation for this donation. For Artificial intelligence, I like it but I prefer to study, so I can pass my exams well”, a student who is also a regular visitor stated.
