It’s about time Africa moves beyond being producers of raw materials – Mahama

Ghana’s president, John Dramani Mahama, has advocated that Africa must move beyond producers of raw materials to producers of finished goods.

He is of the view that Africa has immense resources and will be right for the continent to add value to the resources.

We must move beyond being exporters of raw materials to producers of finished goods. Whether it is cocoa from Ghana, oil in Nigeria, copper in Zambia, or diamonds in Botswana, we must process and add value to our natural resources.

By so doing, we will not only increase our share of global trade but also create sustainable jobs for our people, especially our young people,” he said.

The president made an argument for Africans to indigenize ownership of their natural resources.

“We must indiginize ownership of our natural resources. There is capital and technology available to us today to increase our participation in the exploitation of our natural resources.

Our governments must therefore work hand-in-hand with the private sector to drive industrialization through special economic zones that encourage manufacturing and innovation, access to finance to small and medium enterprises which are the backbone of our economies,” he stated while speaking at the African Dialogue series in Accra.
