It’ll be great to perform at iconic Madison Square Garden, says Kojo Antwi

Despite his numerous international performances in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy, Kojo Antwi dreams of performing at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (23 December), Kojo Antwi said, “I see Mike Tyson and other big shows there [Madison Square Garden], and if I get the chance to perform, that would be great [there],” he stated.

Kojo Antwi’s music continues to captivate audiences worldwide, blending highlife, reggae, and other genres to create timeless hits.

The maestro is expected to light up the festive with an event dubbed “Kojo Antwified II” on 24 December 2024, at 6pm at UPSA Auditorium, Legon.

His upcoming performance promises to be a testament to his enduring artistry and his commitment to delivering unforgettable musical experiences.

He invited fans to an exciting performance. The event will feature performances by artists such as Adina, Kojo Black, and a surprise act.

“It’s a blend of different artists, and I’m the headline act,” he revealed, adding that the event will showcase his signature stagecraft, which he describes as unique and exploratory.

The “Music Man” revealed details about his artistry, upcoming events, and a soon-to-be-released book chronicling his journey in the music industry.

New album ready for release

He disclosed that his latest album has been completed for six years and is awaiting the right moment for release.

“I have just about 13 albums. The truth is, the new one has been ready for six years already, and we’re just waiting for the right time to drop it,” he said.

Describing his songwriting process, “The Music Man” emphasised the importance of creativity, drawing inspiration from daily experiences and conversations.

“A musician has to be very creative. I do lyrics and then find a beat, or I work with people and melodies,” he explained, adding that melodies often come to him intuitively, “like tongues,” which he develops into lyrics.

He mentioned that his inspiration could strike at any time, prompting him to jot down ideas wherever he is. He also highlighted the importance of filtering the overwhelming sounds on airwaves to determine what benefits him as a musician.

On being Labeled a “Highlife Musician”

The legendary artist addressed the misconception of being strictly a highlife musician, expressing his preference for a broader label.

“Highlife musician limits me as a performer. My music is centered around reggae, but there’s a lot of highlife and other elements in what I do,” he said.

The Importance of visuals in music today

Kojo Antwi noted the increasing importance of visuals in promoting music.

“Right now, you cannot have a song out there without a video,” he said, acknowledging the shift in the industry’s dynamics and his ongoing exploration of social media platforms to connect with fans.

Reflecting on longevity and legacy

The legendary musician reflected on the realities of a music career, acknowledging the inevitability of artists fading out over time.

“Everything that was created will fade out. When it’s my time, I’ll just walk off and allow the young ones to take over,” he said.

However, he expressed pride in his lasting impact and his plans to contribute further to the industry, including the release of his upcoming book, which aims to benefit Ghana’s music industry as a whole.
