Ghanaians will renew our mandate because of our track record, says regional minister

The Upper East Regional Minister, Hafiz Bin Salih, is confident that Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will be voted for in the 7 December polls.

Bin Salih is convinced that the NPP, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, has performed and delivered on its mandate, and Ghanaians will trust Bawumia to continue its stellar performance.

The Upper East Regional Minister made these comments when he spoke at the 3rd Upper East Regional Ghana Journalists Awards held in Zuarungu, the Bolgatanga East District capital.

“We are confident that our track record will make Ghanaians vote to renew our mandate just as they did in 2020. InshaAllah, ‘we will break the 8’ with H E Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia as our presidential candidate.”

Bin Salih explained that the NPP is a party deeply rooted in democracy and would do all it takes to ensure that the political peace and stability Ghana has enjoyed remain intact.

“In view of our tradition, we want credible elections conducted in a peaceful atmosphere without the interference or hindrance of any political party or candidate. We know that sovereign power emanates from the Ghanaian people and shall be exercised by them.”

“So, it behoves us to behave and respect the rules of the game in expressing our constitutional rights to freedom of speech and political affiliation. To show our commitment to ensuring peaceful elections, I am pleased to reiterate the words of His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, that we shall accept the verdict of the people of Ghana and that the peace, unity, and safety of the country will be our primary consideration.”

The Minister went on to seek support for the Electoral Commission, saying, “It is, therefore, in the interest of all stakeholders, particularly political parties, to support the Electoral Commission as the legally mandated body to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections devoid of acrimony and rancour.”

Bin Salih charged the media to be circumspect, decorous in the use of language, and fair to all political actors ahead of the election.

“As we approach the 2024 general elections, your role in ensuring peaceful elections is even more crucial than ever. We have been there before, but every election comes with its peculiarities. It behoves you to understand the excitement and circumstances of this election, that the stakes are very high, and that we are orientated towards peace and tranquillity.”

Nine journalists were awarded at the event. The Upper East Regional Minister, as the Guest of Honour, supported the Journalist of the Year and Female Journalist of the Year with GHC 1,000 each.
