Ghana must follow South Africa’s transparency model – Kpebu to gov’t

Legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has raised concerns over political interference in high-profile cases.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, Kpebu highlighted the dangers of using the criminal justice system as a tool for political gain, calling for greater transparency and accountability.

His comments come in the wake of the controversial case involving Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and businessman Richard Jakpa.

The case, which sparked nationwide debate, gained further traction after a leaked tape suggested that former Attorney-General Godfred Dame had faced pressure from then-President Nana Akufo-Addo and Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to ensure the prosecution of the two individuals.

Kpebu, visibly frustrated by the implications of such political maneuvering, did not mince words.

“The criminal justice system is not for political point-scoring. We heard it directly from the Attorney-General himself, yet the case proceeded.

This is exactly why such cases should be discontinued if they are proven to be politically motivated,” he stated. For many Ghanaians, his remarks resonate deeply.

Kpebu further emphasized the need for transparency when high-profile cases are withdrawn, citing international examples where accountability mechanisms are strictly enforced.

“If an Attorney-General decides to cancel a case, the public deserves an explanation.

“We cannot allow leaders to wield power arbitrarily. In South Africa and other democracies, transparency is a legal requirement. Ghana should follow suit,” he argued.

“This is an abuse of rights. If a person has gone through the full trial process and the state still cannot convict him, why is he still in custody?”
