Forensic audit of voters’ register should be last resort, says CDD-Ghana fellow

Prof John Osae-Kwapong, a fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has said going on a protest against the voter’s register should be a last resort for any political party.

His comment is in reference to call by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a forensic audit of the voter’s register ahead of the December elections.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (13 September), Osae-Kwapong said the NDC should give the Electoral Commission the opportunity to address their concerns before calling for a forensic audit.

”… a forensic audit, for me, it should be the last resort. In the sense that when you call for a forensic audit, then it means that whatever discrepancies or issues that you have found with the register, it’s so egregious that you don’t believe the normal administrative processes of the Electoral Commission can fix this.”

”So if those things have been identified, I would hope that those things are given to the EC. and you give them an opportunity to fix it,” he said.

”And then if it is not fixed… then I think you can for a forensic audit, to ensure that, the, the voters register, will stand the test of time come 7 December,” Osae-Kwapong added.
