In a passionate address to African ambassadors and high commissioners on Friday, December 20, President-elect John Dramani Mahama called for fairness and consistency in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) handling of election disputes.
Speaking directly to the contentious issue of election declarations and the discrepancies surrounding certain constituencies, Mahama reminded the EC that the rules must remain the same regardless of the political context or individuals involved.
Drawing a parallel between the ongoing disputes and past election scenarios, Mahama emphasized that the EC should not shift its position based on who is affected by the dispute.
“So, if a declaration has been made, it doesn’t matter under what circumstance; they are saying some are under duress,” he stated, referencing situations where election results were declared under tense and controversial circumstances.
Mahama highlighted the case of Techiman South, a constituency where the declaration of results was fraught with confusion and allegations of military interference.
“In the case of Techiman South, it was under duress with soldiers in the collation room.
There was chaos in the collation when the declaration was made,” Mahama recounted. This declaration, according to Mahama, had sparked calls for a re-collation, but the EC had firmly rejected such demands.
“The same arguments were passed that there should be a re-collation, and the EC said no,” Mahama recalled.
However, Mahama’s frustration was evident as he pointed out the apparent inconsistency in how the EC had handled similar situations in the past.
“In the same circumstances, declarations have been made,” he said, emphasizing that if citizens have grievances, they should be directed to the courts to seek resolution.
“If the people have any grievances, they must go to court and address those grievances there,” Mahama noted, reaffirming the importance of using legal channels to resolve disputes.
