Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah Grace, has advocated for emergency medical services for the Parliament of Ghana.

She indicates that since she joined Parliament, she has combed the nooks and crannies of the house but did not find any emergency services provided for Parliamentarians and the staff of Parliament.

The first time Member of Parliament is worried that the lives of people in Parliament could be at risk with the lack of such emergency services.

She is advocating for a committee to be set up to handle this important service to help save lives in the August house in case of an emergency.

“My issue is about emergency medical services. Since I came to Parliament about a couple of weeks ago, I have gone around the entire premises, and I don’t see any emergency kits or any emergency services provided for us parliamentarians. I don’t see AEDs in the bathroom and in the hallways.

And the other day we also saw the former President’s ADC who fainted in the chamber, and the way the ADC was actually carted away was actually not per standard of care. So Mr Speaker, as a Trauma Surgeon myself, I would like to propose that with your indulgence that we have a committee that might even have an emergency services team so that we can walk the premises the premise and see how best we can help ourselves in the room.

I also have an agency that we teach emergency services, which is advanced Cardiac life support, which is what happens when people are having heart attacks or stroke. We also have the stroke care.

That maybe we offer some of these classes to our parliamentarians and not only parliamentarians but the staff and our drivers, and maybe our house helps so that in case one of us is in trouble at least there is someone who can perform first aid. Proper first aid leads to decreased morbidity and mortality, and all the studies have shown that. So for me, I am concerned that we don’t have those services available, not even an AED in any of the hallways. Should anyone of us in this room have an emergency situation I think that we probably may not make it to the nearest hospital. So we really need to look at that for us in the chamber and all of us in this house of parliament,” she said while speaking on the floor of Parliament.
