Election Nerve Centre: We have plans to organise presidential debate this year, says NCCE

The director of programmes at the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), Imurana Mohammed, has said the institution has plans to organise a presidential debate ahead of the 2024 general elections.

He said this year’s presidential debate initiative depends on the availability of candidates from the various political parties.

Speaking during the launch of Asaase’s Election Nerve Centre, Mohammed said while the NCCE is poised to organise a presidential debate to enhance the country’s democracy, the institution cannot compel the political parties to participate.

He said, “We have done it in the past. We have plans towards a debate, however, you can force the horse to the riverside but you can’t force it to drink… it depends on the availability of the candidates.”

“So it’s [organising a presidential debate] definitely part of our plans this year,” he added.

Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has thrown a challenge to the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, to a live presidential debate.

However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has, so far, declined to accept the challenge for a debate on the country’s economy.
