Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), has reassured Ghanaians and political stakeholders that the concerns surrounding the 2024 voter registration process have been fully addressed.
In a recent appearance on JoyNews’ popular Newsfile program monitored by MyNewsGh.com, he made a significant announcement regarding the next steps the EC is taking to ensure a transparent and inclusive electoral process ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Asare emphasized the importance of collaboration and transparency between the Electoral Commission and political parties. He revealed that the commission has scheduled an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting for Tuesday, October 1, 2024. During this meeting, the EC will present the complete voter’s register to the political parties and other relevant stakeholders. This step is crucial for fostering trust and ensuring that all concerns are addressed before the election season gains full momentum.
The announcement comes on the back of earlier concerns raised by the NDC and and civil society groups about the voter registration exercise. Critics of the process had voiced apprehensions about the accessibility of registration centers, the EC’s handling of the registration process, and possible disenfranchisement of some voters, particularly in remote areas. In addressing these concerns, Dr. Asare noted that the EC has taken concrete measures to ensure that every eligible Ghanaian is given the opportunity to register and vote in the upcoming elections.
With transparency and accountability at the forefront of the EC’s agenda, Ghanaians can look forward to a more inclusive and transparent election process. The active involvement of political parties in reviewing the voter’s register is expected to enhance trust in the system and ensure a fair election for all.
