Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, has shed light on the rigorous process that led to the disqualification of 10 presidential aspirants from the upcoming elections.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Dr. Asare explained that the Commission followed a thorough and scientific process in evaluating the candidates, with clear roles assigned to both a Technical Committee and an IT Committee.
The Technical Committee was responsible for ensuring that all aspirants met the necessary qualifications, while the IT Committee was tasked with verifying that the endorsers of the candidates were also eligible.
This structured process was designed to maintain the integrity of the electoral system and to ensure that all candidates met the requirements laid out by the Commission.
Dr. Asare emphasized that throughout the nomination process, aspirants were given the opportunity to correct any errors in their submissions. Despite these chances for revisions, 10 aspirants ultimately failed to meet the Commission’s criteria.
He strongly rejected any notion that the disqualification decisions were based on personal bias or political preference.
According to him, the entire exercise was based on objective standards, and anyone who believes that the EC acted out of personal malice is “making a very serious mistake.”
Dr. Asare’s comments are aimed at addressing speculations and criticisms surrounding the disqualification process, as the EC seeks to uphold transparency and fairness in its operations ahead of the upcoming elections.
“When we started the nomination, the returning officer stated that the Commission has two committees, and they are a Technical Committee and an IT Committee, and they were given specific responsibilities. One of the responsibilities of the technical committee was to ensure that all the aspirants were qualified, and the IT committee was also to ensure that those who endorsed the candidates were qualified. So when you look at the announcement that was made by the chairperson from that particular perspective, the team was tasked to go through the application process and all of them were given opportunities to make corrections when necessary.”
“So at the conclusion of the exercise, we noticed that 10 people couldn’t satisfy the requirements of the commission, and we engaged in a very scientific exercise, so anybody who thinks that the Commission took a personal decision or the Commission did not like that person or the party the person is coming from, the person is making a very serious mistake,” he explained on the show.
