Demonstration against illegal mining are instigated marches—Napo

Running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku, is of the view that the marches against illegal mining are instigated marches.

According to him, when Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declared that he was putting his presidency on the line in the fight against illegal mining, he did not receive the needed support from the people of Ghana.

The opposition political party rather used it as an opportunity to score cheap political points and was never heard supporting the president in the fight against illegal mining.

Napo also questioned associations like UTAG, Organized labour among others whose voices were missing in 2020 on the fight against Galamsey but have now found their voices.

“The first illegal strike by organized strike because they represent both the private and public sectors. How did they expect the country to be run? The workers saw the light and pulled out. Where was UTAG, organized Labour and the Catholic Priests when the President fought against galamsey, and that led to the NPP losing votes and seats?” he said.

He insisted that the New Patriotic Party’s political fortunes were affected by the fight against Galamsey in 2020, indicating that even in places where they won the election, their votes were reduced drastically.

“The fight against illegal mining caused the NPP to win the 2020 election by 500,000. I’ve been an elections director before and I told you. We lost seats because of the fight and even those that we won, our votes reduced,” he said.

Napo expressed shock that the NDC that instigated the demonstrations did not join the demonstrations but rather pushed Ghanaians on the street out of ignorance.

“Those who instigated the people of Ghana to hit the streets did not join. Why? because they thought they would be beaten like they beat our people during the kumepreko demonstrations years ago,” he said.
