The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has clarified its decision to shut down Terminal 1 at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), which was allocated to McDan Aviation for private jet services, due to unpaid debts.
According to GACL, McDan Company Limited owes a total of $3,995,622.66 and GH¢13,523.37.
Despite McDan recently paying GH¢2 million on 24 December, the GACL insists on the full settlement of all outstanding debts, citing a history of default since 2020.
In a statement issued on Tuesday (31 December), the GACL explained, “We conduct regular debt collection exercises every month to recover debts owed to the company and also round up debt collection for the year. McDan Company Limited has defaulted on its payment obligations despite suggested payment plans dating back to 2020.”
The GACL further stated that it was not singling out McDan, as four other companies operating at the airport had also been shut down for non-payment of debts.
“We will continue to pursue all debts as we have always done throughout the years to retrieve monies owed to GACL,” the statement emphasized.
Land Dispute and Revenue Sharing
The GACL also accused McDan of refusing to make payments for lands acquired from the company since 2015.
McDan reportedly claimed the lands were under litigation and requested GACL to hold off on payments.
However, GACL pointed out, “McDan Company Limited has developed the same lands with commercial buildings situated on it and is benefiting from rental proceeds without paying ground rent to GACL.”
Additionally, McDan is required to pay a 15% share of gross revenue as monthly returns for the period from September 1, 2022, to November 30, 2024, which remains outstanding.
Payment Details
“For the record, McDan Company Limited paid two million Ghana cedis (GH¢2,000,000) on December 24, 2024, out of the outstanding three million nine hundred and ninety-five, six hundred and twenty-two US dollars, sixty-six cents ($3,995,622.66) and thirteen thousand five hundred and twenty-three cedis thirty-seven pesewas (GH¢13,523.37) owed GACL,” the statement highlighted.
Despite these payments, the GACL insists that McDan must settle the entire debt before the company is granted access to Terminal 1.
