Bawumia concedes defeat: “We’ve lost the battle, not the war”

In a defining moment for Ghana’s democracy, New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia has gracefully conceded defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 general election.

Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday (8 December), Bawumia announced his decision ahead of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) official declaration, aiming to calm tensions and uphold the nation’s peace.

“I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of two things: Ghana will win and peace will reign,” he said, his tone both reflective and resolute.

“The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time and we respect that decision with all humility.”

By making his concession early, Bawumia said he hoped to protect Ghana’s international reputation as a beacon of stability and democracy in Africa.

“It is important that the world investor community continues to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana,” he emphasised.

Bawumia pledged that the NPP would play a constructive role as the opposition while continuing its mission to transform Ghana.

“The NPP would offer the needed support to the new government in a very responsible way,” he assured.

“We have conceded defeat like any consummate democrat would do, but we have not abandoned the fight to transform Ghana and expand opportunities to all sections of our society.”

He vowed that the party’s scrutiny of government policies would be thorough but not disruptive.

“Our MPs, I am convinced, will do a thorough job to advance our democracy and ensure that the citizenry gets the best out of the democratic dispensation.”

Looking ahead, Bawumia rallied his supporters to stay hopeful, promising that the NPP would learn from this loss and return stronger.

“We will regroup and come back even stronger. We will take stock of events and pick lessons to guide us going forward. In the interim, I urge you all to look into the future with optimism and hope; we may have lost the battle but not the war,” he said.
