The Nsuta Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has delivered its ruling on the case involving a 16-member fake currency syndicate arrested in 2020.
The group had been circulating counterfeit money in the Bono East, Ashanti, and Western Regions, primarily using GH₵200, GH₵100, GH₵10, and GH₵5 denominations.
The syndicate was traced back to several locations, including Kumasi’s Embassy Hotel and Ducor Hotel, where goods such as household items, bicycles, and agrochemicals were purchased using fake notes. The police operation, which seized GH₵34,658 in genuine currency and GH₵41,111 in counterfeit notes, led to the arrest of the women involved.
In court on Thursday (19 December), the judge, Justice Winnie Amoatey-Owusu convicted and sentenced nine of the accused to a fine ranging from GH₵6,000 and GH₵12,000 or sentenced to between two- and five-years’ imprisonment in default.
All the convicts were mandated to serve 14 days at Kumasi Central Prisons. One of the ladies, who tested positive for pregnancy during a court-ordered test paid her fine of GH₵12,000.
Four others were acquitted and discharged while bench warrants were issued for the arrest of five accused persons, who were absent during the proceedings.
The genuine cash retrieved will be returned, while other legitimate funds seized will be deposited into the Judicial Service account. The fake currencies will be sent to the Bank of Ghana for destruction, and non-perishable items seized from the accused will be destroyed.
The convicts begun their sentences on Friday (20 December), at Kumasi Central Prisons, with further action being taken by the CID headquarters in Accra.
