President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Thursday granted presidential charters to 14 Ghanaian private universities.
The institutions include the Academic City University College, KAAF University College, Entrance University College of Health Sciences, Garden City University College, Family Health University College, Ensign Global College, Thrivus Institute for Biomedical Science and Technology, Heritage Christian University College, and University College of Gold Coast (formerly known as Accra Business School).
The rest are Knutsford University College, Nobel International Business School, Accra Metropolitan University college (formerly known as Laweh University College), African University College of Communications and Business (formerly known as African University College of Communications), and the National Defence College.
At a ceremony at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo stated that granting the charters highlighted his administration’s dedication to transforming Ghana’s educational landscape.
“The grant of presidential charters to these institutions across our nation is a testament of the unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation and nation building,” the outgoing President asserted.
The President emphasised that his administration had granted unprecedented presidential charters to Ghanaian private universities in the last eight years.
The period saw 21 university colleges awarded presidential charters to enhance their autonomy and status.
“This marks a transformative milestone in the history of our nation’s tertiary education landscape,” he stated.
President Akufo-Addo indicated that the criteria for granting the presidential charters encompassed excellence in governance, quality assurance, academic delivery, research and community engagement.
“The grant of a presidential charter represents the highest recognition that a tertiary institution in Ghana can achieve,” the President said.
The President commended the institutions for their new status, acknowledging their hard work in meeting the stringent criteria set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
He disclosed that all existing university colleges had been given up to four years to prove their readiness for a charter by fulfilling the prescribed conditions, as part of efforts to enhance the quality of tertiary education.
Professor Goski Alabi, Founder and President of Accra Metropolitan University, speaking on behalf of the 14 chartered universities, thanked the President for his dedication to advancing quality education, particularly at the tertiary level.
