President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has accused some National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives of encouraging followers to damage state property after John Dramani Mahama was declared the victor of the presidential election on 7 December.
The president called for an end to such behaviour and vehemently denounced these acts, saying they damaged Ghana’s democratic reputation.
President Akufo-Addo urged all stakeholders to put the country’s democratic values first while praising the Electoral Commission (EC) for holding what he called a free, fair, and transparent election during his remarks at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentenary Anniversary on Sunday, 22 December 2024.
“It is with deep concern that I acknowledge the unfortunate incidents of post-election hooliganism, vandalism, and violence that followed. Incidents which threaten to tarnish the beauty of our democratic exercise. Such acts were completely unnecessary and were wholly unacceptable. They must never reoccur.
“Regrettably, these unfortunate disturbances appear to involve some executives and sympathisers of the victorious party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). As a nation, we must be resolute in our commitment to safeguarding peace, stability, and democratic values.”
