Without Digitalzation, Ghana Risks Falling Behind – Ursula Owusu Declares

Ghana’s Communications and Digitalization Minister, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has passionately defended the government’s digitalization agenda, which she describes as a cornerstone of national progress, despite resistance from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking in an interview on Pure FM, Ursula emphasized the critical importance of digital literacy and innovation in keeping Ghana aligned with global technological advancements. She argued that digitization is not merely a government buzzword but a vital strategy to revitalize Ghana’s economy and curb systemic corruption.

“The NDC continues to claim that our economy is struggling, yet they reject the one tool that can truly transform it—digitization,” Ursula asserted. “Around the world, digital economies are flourishing, and nations are creating dedicated ministries to oversee these transformations. We cannot afford to be left behind.”

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West underscored the practical benefits of digitization across various sectors, from health and education to business and governance. She pointed out how digitization enhances transparency, accountability, and efficiency, especially in combating corruption.

“Digitization creates a paper trail that is difficult to manipulate,” she explained. “If we are serious about fighting corruption, then digitization is the answer. It’s the tool that ensures everyone is held accountable, from public officials to private citizens.”

Ursula also highlighted how even small investments in digital infrastructure could yield significant economic dividends. “A simple expansion of network coverage to rural areas has a ripple effect—opening up opportunities for education, trade, and access to essential services. The impact on the economy is undeniable,” she stated.
