You can’t justify today’s actions with past parliament’s mistakes – Inusah Fuseini

Former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Inusah Fuseini, has expressed concerns over the growing trend of indiscipline in Ghana’s Ninth Parliament, cautioning MPs against setting a precedent of impunity.

Speaking on Newsfile on JoyNews with Sam Lardy, he remarked, “That statement was not intended for public consumption, but somehow, the voice of that person failed him—too loud! He didn’t speak into the microphone; he shouted. And that’s the problem.”

He explained that while parliamentary debates often get heated, MPs must learn the boundaries of decorum.

“We say things in Parliament, but when you shout too loud to the hearing of the Speaker, you are fished out and reprimanded. Members of Parliament must begin to learn this.”

Addressing the recent controversy surrounding placards and statements made in Parliament, he recalled that this practice is not new.

“Placards started long ago in Parliament, long before the minority then engaged in it. But let’s not focus on the placards themselves—I’m talking about the nature of what they held.”

On the argument that the majority has no moral right to complain about derogatory remarks against Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, given past incidents involving Alhassan Sarimu, Fuseini disagreed.

“You cannot hold the Ninth Parliament accountable for the acts of the Eighth Parliament. You can refer to history for context, but you can’t justify an action today by what happened in a previous Parliament.”

He emphasized the need for nation-building through responsible leadership, stating, “Every enlightened people have their dirty aspects of history, but when it comes to documentation, you write the things that lift everybody up. Our parliamentarians and leaders must understand this very clearly.”
