The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, (‘Wontumi’) has rejected allegations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, has been tasked to rig the 2024 elections in favour of the governing party.
The opposition party at a press conference on Tuesday (19 November) called for the immediate removal of the army chief insisting that he should not be involved in the security architecture for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
“A person like him has no place in the current environment where Ghanaians are calling for violence-free elections. Given his history, we call for his immediate removal from his position as GOC of the Central Command,” said Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the NDC.
“The NDC wishes to serve notice to Brigadier-General Michael Opoku and his collaborators in the New Patriotic Party that we have them under our radar and will continue to monitor them with eagle eyes. This time around, he and his ilk shall not succeed. Violence cannot and will not win the NPP this year’s election,” Mr Gyamfi warned.
Describing the claims as “infantile,” Mr Antwi-Boasiako stated that such accusations are a desperate attempt to explain an anticipated election defeat.
“The NDC is not campaigning vigorously in the Ashanti Region,” he said. “Instead, they are sitting in the comfort of their homes and offices, devising strategies to blame the NPP for election rigging. Meanwhile, the NPP is working tirelessly as though we are in opposition”, Wontumi said in a press statement copied to Asaaseradio.com
He pointed out that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, has nearly completed touring all 276 constituencies across Ghana, with only two left to visit. In contrast, former President John Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer, has toured only 65 constituencies with just 18 days remaining until the general elections.
“The NDC’s allegations are a pre-emptive excuse for their impending loss. We don’t need any army officer to rig the election in our favour,” he said, adding that the police and army are necessary only to maintain order and address potential violence from NDC members allegedly training under retired Commissioner of Police, Kofi Boakye.
Wontumi reiterated his confidence in the NPP’s chances, attributing it to the party’s hard work and impactful policies.
