Why were you giving out food at the polling Station? -Lecturer asks MP

Dr. Amakye Boateng, a Senior Political Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has described the actions of Lydia Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West, as a serious breach of peace during the special voting on Monday, December 2nd, 2024.

In an interview on Onua FM, Dr Boateng called for Lydia Alhassan’s arrest, criticizing her behaviour at the polling station.

He questioned the contents of the poly bags she distributed, asking, “Why would you go to a polling station and distribute something in a poly bag? How can we be sure that what she was handing out was only food and not bombs?”

Dr. Boateng emphasized the significance of polling stations as security zones, given the importance of the elections. He also called for the security personnel stationed at the polling center to be questioned for allowing such an incident to occur.

“These same leaders who preach about promoting peace should recognize that what happened was a breach of peace,” Dr. Boateng remarked. “The fact that it didn’t escalate into violence doesn’t mean it wasn’t a threat to our peace as a country. This should not have happened. Ghana is a civilized country, and we don’t need this.”

The controversy arose after videos surfaced showing Lydia Alhassan at the Legon Police Station polling center, where she was seen distributing food and water to people in the voting queue. In response to the claims, Lydia Alhassan denied being present at the polling station when the incident reportedly took place.

In an interview with JoyNews, she stated, “I wasn’t here. I don’t know if you saw me here. I came here before 6 a.m. and left a few minutes ago. I don’t even know what you’re talking about. I am yet to find out from them what happened.”
