Vice-chancellor of University of Cape Coast ousted

The vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has been removed from his post just days before his extended term was due to begin.

The UCC Council announced on Wednesday (31 July 2024) that it had revoked the renewal of Boampong’s contract, citing breaches of the university’s statutes and Ghana’s constitution.

The pharmacist and biomedical scientist was appointed vice-chancellor in 2020 for a four-year term which was due to end on (Wednesday) 31 July 2024.

It had been reported that his contract would be extended by two years.

However, in a letter dated 31 July, the chairman of the UCC Council, Harold Amonoo-Kuofi, informed Boampong that the extension had been withdrawn.

The council said the proposed renewal would have extended the vice-chancellor’s tenure beyond his mandatory retirement age of 60, which is due on 18 September 2025.

It also argued that the process to extend the contract was flawed, as it failed to adhere to the university’s statutes regarding the establishment of a search committee.

“Procedurally void”

“Considering that you will be 60 … and due for compulsory retirement on 18 September 2025, the two-year renewal granted you by the Council effective 1 August 2024 would extend your position as vice-chancellor well beyond your retirement age. This breaches the constitution and the university’s statutes,” the letter said.

“Further to these, the renewal of your term as vice-chancellor was procedurally void, as no properly constituted search committee was put in place, as required by Statute 8.15, to fulfil its mandate imposed by Statutes 8.16 and 8.17 in the appointment or renewal process,” it said.

Boampong’s extended term was scheduled to begin today, 1 August.

The pro vice-chancellor will now serve as the acting vice-chancellor of UCC until a permanent replacement is found.

“The pro vice-chancellor is directed to take over and act as vice-chancellor with effect from 1 August 2024 until a new substantive vice chancellor is appointed,” the letter from the UCC Council chairman said.

The council thanked Boampong for his service to UCC and wished him well for the future.

“The Council of the university thanks you immensely for your dedicated service to the university and wishes you well in your future endeavours.”
