The Revolution of Directional Drilling: Specialist Presents Global Overview

Do you know what directional drilling is? Directional drilling is a technique used to control and direct the trajectory of a wellbore, rather than following a straight vertical path. It is widely employed in industries such as oil and gas, mining, and civil construction, especially to access resources that are not directly below the drilling point.

This technique allows drilling at specific angles, horizontally, or even in curves, enabling access to multiple oil or gas reservoirs from a single surface location, maximizing extraction, avoiding obstacles such as geological formations or human structures, and minimizing environmental impact, as it requires fewer surface areas for drilling.

To better understand this market, its specifics, and even its future, we spoke with an industry expert, Jignesh Vaghela, currently working as a Product Engineer at Ditch Witch (Charles Machine Works, Inc.), who stands out in the application of directional drilling technologies. According to him, this technique has become fundamental in the energy, construction, and telecommunications industries, addressing the growing demand for more efficient and sustainable solutions.

According to a study by Grand View Research, the market is expected to reach approximately USD 20.4 billion by 2027, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.1% during the period from 2020 to 2027. “This growth is driven by the increase in unconventional resource exploration and the need to access reserves in difficult locations, such as urban or ecologically sensitive areas,” said Jignesh.

Technological advancements are key drivers for this market, especially the integration of real-time monitoring tools, such as Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) and Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) systems, for example. According to the expert, these tools increase precision and allow for better control during drilling operations.

“Rotary steerable systems and automation also improve accuracy and reduce the environmental footprint, making directional drilling an increasingly attractive option for energy companies,” he adds.

Jignesh Vaghela stands out in the application of directional drilling technologies. With a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a specialization in Control Systems, he is an expert in embedded systems, which are essential for the automation and precise control of drilling machines. His experience in developing directional drilling machines positions him as one of the key professionals driving the advancement of this technology.

As the demand for energy resources continues to grow, directional drilling becomes increasingly indispensable. With advancing technologies, new methods and tools are expected to further improve the efficiency of these operations.

“The combination of automation, artificial intelligence, and advanced control systems is transforming directional drilling into a safer and more sustainable process, ensuring that the industry meets global needs responsibly. We can say that this market has a promising future, and competent professionals are essential to guide this revolution,” adds Jignesh.

Directional Drilling Trends

Jignesh, an expert on the subject, pointed out several key trends for the future of directional drilling. Among them, he cited the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation, which will allow for more precise and efficient drilling. According to the professional, automated systems, such as the Rotary Steerable System (RSS), are already helping companies conduct drilling with less manual interference, which not only improves accuracy but also reduces drilling time, increasing productivity and lowering operational costs.

The search for more sustainable practices is also contributing to an increased demand for technologies that minimize environmental impact. “Directional drilling allows companies to reduce the number of drilling sites by concentrating several wells in a single location, thereby reducing the need for new wells and lowering the carbon footprint of operations,” the expert adds.

Within this trend, there are also some expanding markets, such as the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa. “These regions are increasingly investing in the exploration of their energy resources, and directional drilling will be a critical tool to reach reserves located in hard-to-reach areas or under strict environmental regulations,” concludes Jignesh.

The specialist, who has a track record of awards, such as the RSU Award from Ditch Witch (Toro) and recognition in renowned companies such as GE and Mahindra Satyam, contributes day by day to the development of innovative solutions that improve the efficiency and safety of drilling operations. His initiatives have a direct impact on cost reduction and productivity maximization, helping shape the future of directional drilling.

In conclusion, directional drilling is firmly established as one of the most important and transformative technologies for the energy sector, especially in oil and gas. With the ability to access difficult-to-reach reservoirs and reduce environmental impacts, it offers sustainable and economically viable solutions to address global energy challenges.

“Overall, the continuous evolution of directional drilling is extremely important for the future of energy, enabling access to new energy frontiers with less environmental impact and greater operational efficiency,” concludes Jignesh.
