Ghanaian lawmaker Eugene Boakye Antwi has openly praised the contributions of Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) historic 2016 election victory.
Speaking in an interview on Metro TV, the Subin MP highlighted how the leadership duo laid a solid foundation that secured 169 parliamentary seats for the NPP, outshining the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which garnered 106 seats.
Boakye Antwi emphasized that the strategic collaboration between Afoko and Agyepong was instrumental in Nana Akufo-Addo’s landslide victory against John Dramani Mahama in 2016.
“The leadership of Afoko and Agyepong was a masterstroke for the NPP,” he remarked. “Their organizational skills and grassroots mobilization delivered an unprecedented margin of victory for the party.”
Reflecting on the contrast between the party’s success in 2016 and its recent struggles in the 2024 elections, Boakye Antwi did not hold back his critique of the current leadership.
He called out Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary, and former General Secretary John Boadu, suggesting their leadership failed to uphold the standards set by their predecessors.
“Our current leadership has simply not matched the competence of Afoko and Agyepong,” he stated bluntly. “In 2016, we saw meticulous planning and unity of purpose. Today, the NPP has been brought to its knees, and we must face the truth if we want to rebuild.”
Boakye Antwi’s comments come at a time of intense introspection for the NPP, which recently faced a disappointing loss to the NDC in the 2024 general elections. The party has struggled with internal divisions, a disengaged base, and questions about its leadership’s ability to connect with voters.
Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong’s tenure was not without controversy, as both leaders faced suspensions in the lead-up to the 2016 elections amid internal party tensions.
However, their work in galvanizing grassroots support and ensuring effective communication between the party’s leadership and its supporters is now being re-evaluated as a key factor in the NPP’s earlier success.
