Teofimo Lopez, an American light-welterweight boxer, defeated fellow countryman Jamaine Ortiz by controversial unanimous decision to win the WBO world title in Las Vegas.
The 26-year-old just about made it through, earning a 115-113 after the judges gave him one extremely controversial scorecard of 117-111.
Boos and jeers were heard from the Michelob Ultra Arena’s patrons following the announcement of the scorecards.
Fans were taken aback by the outcome because they were more impressed with Ortiz’s skill than with a helpless Lopez.
The 27-year-old Ortiz made Lopez chase shadows as he found it difficult to locate his opponent, much less deliver a blow.
“I followed the strategy and paid attention to my group and my corner.” “I felt like I was winning,” Ortiz remarked.
“I believe I prevailed in the battle. How do I put it? I was making him miss the entire night, so he couldn’t hit me. That 117-111 is just absurd.
However, Lopez, the two-weight world champion, accused his opponent of fighting too cautiously.
Lopez remarked, “We cannot claim these people, these fighters, for even a moment, if they choose not to come and fight.”
Lopez said, “You all could boo all you want,” before hurling a derogatory homophobic slur at the assembly.
“Ortiz, a skilled counterpuncher, was also seen wearing Hayabusa boxing gloves during the match.”
Lopez challenged unified welterweight champion Terence Crawford of the United States to a catchweight match.
“I’m here and prepared. He declared, “I’m younger, I’m prettier, and I’m hungry.”
