At a global conference hosted by the World Lottery Association (WLA) and European Lotteries, Samuel Awuku, former Director-General of Ghana’s National Lottery Authority (NLA), has made a passionate appeal for stronger regulations on lottery advertising and gambling addiction.
Speaking as the only African panelist at the event, Awuku emphasized the need for safeguards to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly minors, from the potential harms of lottery and gambling.
Awuku urged governments to ensure that lottery advertising prioritizes the well-being of players, ensuring that the system works for the benefit of society while minimizing the risk of addiction.
“I am making a passionate appeal that in our quest to increase revenue, we should not compromise on the fight against addiction and protecting minors in our advertisement,” Awuku said.
He also advocated for more robust laws to combat gambling addiction, pointing to the global trend of taking action on this issue.
“The benefits of good causes should be felt by people in the remote parts of the world, but we must balance this with the need to protect vulnerable populations from the dangers of gambling addiction,” he stated.
Awuku’s remarks resonated with the international audience, with many acknowledging the significant role of lottery proceeds in funding social good.
“It’s not just about generating revenue, but also about ensuring that the system benefits society as a whole without causing harm to those most at risk,” he concluded.
