Cholera outbreak hit Agona West; authorities confirm 11 cases

The Ghana Health Service in the Agona West District, Central Region, is currently addressing 214 suspected cholera cases within the Municipality.

Health officials have confirmed 11 cases so far, prompting heightened vigilance from local authorities.

The Directorate has implemented various measures in response to the suspected outbreak, which includes the 214 suspected cases.

Bertha Arthur, the Municipal Health Director for Agona West, has urged residents to remain vigilant as efforts continue to control the situation.

The Directorate has also called on the public to uphold strict hygiene practices and seek medical attention promptly if they notice symptoms of cholera.

“As of now, we suspect 214 cases. ‘Suspected’ means these individuals presented with dehydration, diarrhoea, and vomiting. We have confirmed 11 cases, as laboratory tests have verified that these individuals have cholera,” Bertha Arthur said in an interview with Citi News.

“Once a district confirms or suspects an outbreak exceeding a certain threshold, it escalates to an emergency situation,” she added.

“We need everyone to join forces to tackle this crisis. We’ve ramped up awareness campaigns to inform the public about the outbreak. We are collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to manage the situation. We also urge people to report to the hospital as soon as they notice cholera symptoms,” Arthur further stressed.
