The Ashanti Region has a new Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria Al Shoukry, who succeeds the late Sheikh Abdul Mumin Haroun.
Sheikh Haroun passed away on December 17, 2024, at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, after serving the Muslim community for 13 years.
Sheikh Al Shoukry, who previously served as the Deputy Chief Imam for 13 years, was unanimously approved for the role by the Council of Ulama, the Council of Zongo Chiefs, and elders under the Ghana Muslim Mission.
In a ceremony held at the Islamic Senior High School, the National Chairman of the Ghana Muslim Mission, Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu, officially announced the appointment, emphasizing the responsibilities the new Chief Imam will assume.
“You will work to advance the interests of the Ghana Muslim Mission, uphold its values and objectives, contribute to the growth and development of Islam, and enhance the welfare of Muslims,” said Sheikh Dr. Bonsu.
He further urged Sheikh Al Shoukry to lead in a manner that transcends tribal, sectarian, and political divisions, fostering inclusivity and respect across the diverse Muslim community.
“We are confident that your experience, wisdom, and leadership abilities make you the ideal candidate for this position. We look forward to working with you to promote the interests of the Ghana Muslim Mission and the Muslim community in Ghana,” he added.
Sheikh Al Shoukry expressed gratitude for the appointment and called for unity and support from the Muslim community to achieve their shared goals.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Alhaji Karim Grusah, highlighting the importance of the occasion to the region’s Muslim community.
