President John Dramani Mahama has named Nana Oye Bampoe Addo as Deputy Chief of Staff (Administration), a significant appointment that brings her extensive experience in human rights, social justice, and governance to the Ghanaian presidency.

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo is a distinguished human rights lawyer with over 30 years of experience. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Master’s in Law (LLM) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.

Her career has focused on championing international, regional, and national human rights and social justice. As Africa Regional Coordinator for the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, she spearheaded numerous global human rights campaigns. She also founded the Human Rights Advocacy Centre, a leading NGO dedicated to research and advocacy in human rights.

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo played a critical role in advocating for and securing the passage of key legislation, including the Children’s Act, the Criminal Code Amendment Act, and the Domestic Violence Act. She has led various human rights missions, monitored violations, and consistently held governments accountable for their actions.

Her efforts have earned her global recognition. She is a recipient of the Vera Chirwa Award for human rights in Africa and has been named among the most influential African women.

In government, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo has demonstrated exceptional leadership. As the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection under a previous NDC administration, she was instrumental in developing policies such as the Gender Policy, Social Protection Policy, and Child and Family Welfare Policy. She restructured the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP) and successfully led efforts to close a traditional witch camp in the Northern Region of Ghana.

Her contributions to the NDC are equally noteworthy. She has served as Secretary of the Conflict Resolution Committee, Secretary of the Manifesto Committee, and Chair of the Gender, Children and Social Protection Committee. Additionally, she was a member of the World Bank Advisory Council for the Partnership for Economic Inclusion.
