An Accra Circuit Court presided over by Samuel Bright Acquah has sentenced a 33-year-old preacher, Christopher Kofi Okyere Sorkpa, to five years in prison for vandalising vehicles owned by Members of Parliament.
The incident took place on Wednesday (18 December) at the Parliament House premises.
The accused, now a convict, pleaded guilty to all six charges against him, resulting in his conviction.
In contrast, his co-accused, Wisdom Ahli, has been remanded in custody as the evidence was insufficient to link him to the offences at this time.
During the proceedings, Superintendent Yirenkyi, representing the prosecution, disclosed that after a thorough examination of the evidence, it was determined that the charges against Ahli were flawed.
Consequently, he has directed a CID officer to revise the charges so they can be properly addressed during the next court session set for 9 January 2025.
The court has adjourned pending further deliberations regarding the second accused.
Background
The prosecution presented that the complainants, Inspector Adu Yeboah and L/Cpl. Aaron Awuah, are police officers stationed at Parliament House.
Both accused, Sorkpa and Ahli, claiming to be preachers, are residents of Kasoa.
On the morning of Wednesday (18 December) around 11:00 a.m., the duo allegedly infiltrated the Parliament House car park.
Sorkpa, armed with a handbag containing an earth chisel, vandalised the windscreens of several vehicles, including the following:
- Toyota V8 (GW 1905-21)—owned by Kwaku Okyere Agyekum
- Toyota V8 (GS 5055-17)—owned by Eugene Boakye Antwi
- Toyota Camry Saloon (GB 7539-21)—owned by Jessica Mensah
- Toyota Camry Saloon (GS 9605-21)—owned by Sena Atsu
- Toyota Rav 4 (GN 9605-12)—owned by Gifty Gbah
Testimony also revealed that the second accused, Wisdom Ahli, was observed praising Sorkpa as he committed the acts of vandalism.
Both individuals were apprehended and later confessed to their crimes in statements made in the presence of an independent witness.
Following a thorough investigation, the accused were formally charged and brought to court. Future hearings will focus on clearing the charges against Ahli.
