Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has outlined a plan aimed at reducing the cost of living by ensuring food security in Ghana.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s manifesto ahead of the December 2024 elections, Bawumia detailed a comprehensive strategy to stabilise the prices of locally produced foods, with a particular focus on staple crops, meat, poultry, and fish products.
Central to this strategy will be financing and guarantees provided by Development Bank Ghana (DBG) and the Ghana Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (GIRSAL).
According to Bawumia, these institutions will support initiatives to upscale the production of staple foods while also investing in the preservation of key food items.
“We are committed to making food affordable for all Ghanaians by increasing local production and reducing reliance on imports. Our approach will focus on both the quantity and quality of food produced domestically,” Bawumia said during the launch event.”
“This will involve expanding local farming operations to ensure a consistent supply of essential food items such as maize, rice, cassava, and yams. By increasing the output of these staple foods, the NPP aims to bring down prices on the market and reduce the country’s food import bills,” he added.
In addition to boosting production, the NPP promises to invest in advanced preservation techniques for staple foods as well as meat, poultry, and fish products.
This will include improving storage facilities, processing infrastructure, and cold chain logistics to minimise post-harvest losses and keep food supplies steady throughout the year.
He noted that the programme would be especially beneficial for rural farmers, who often struggle to find markets for their produce due to the lack of proper storage and preservation facilities.
The NPP candidate reiterated his party’s commitment to creating a more resilient and self-sufficient agricultural sector, which would provide Ghanaians with affordable and nutritious food while also creating jobs and supporting rural economies.
