PM Sports Foundation held a one-week-long “EmpowHER Girl Camp” for selected girls from a cluster of schools in Mamrpobi, Accra at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The programme started on Monday (29 July) to Friday (2 August) to empower girls through education and sports to enrich their lives.
“This year alone, we’re close to the target. And every year we do get to 5000 or above- this year, we are around 4800.
It’s all down from the schools that we’re working in. We have close to about 30 schools that we’ll work with.- and each school will pick their class three and class two children. Some schools have double classes,” Peter Mensah, CEO of PM Foundation told Asaase Sports.
On Day one, there was a workshop held to teach the girls about hygiene, and on Day two, the session was about motivation and sports development.
Day three started with a thought-provoking workshop on climate change, empowering our young champions to become environmentally conscious leaders led by climate change advocate Cedric Dzelu.
The girls were given a workshop in Information Technology on Day four before a session on the court to learn the basics of tennis.
Volunteers from Paddington Sports Club in the UK joined the programme to help coach the girls in tennis.
“We’ve been very lucky to have 11 volunteers from the UK, join us to run this camp, and we’re hoping next year will be bigger,” Mensah said.
“Last year, we had two volunteers from the UK this year we have 11. So we’re hoping to have at least 30 volunteers from next year. We are looking to empower the girls to be honest. what we saw last year and this year is amazing.”
He added, “The confidence in the girls is above the level that we even anticipated it to be. We’re not looking at just the champions or those who are going to represent the country. But if we can impact with today’s skills with all the workshops, the seminars, and activities that we’re doing with them, and they can step up and develop their lives through that way, then we’ll be happy.”
PM Sports Foundation was established in 2017 to use sports to enrich the lives of kids, basically introducing kids to sports and giving them all the opportunities in sports, and also helping them with social impact programs.
