Persistent power outages are negatively affecting the livelihoods of residents and business owners in Kete-Krachi, and surrounding areas in the Oti Region.
For more than five years now, residents of Kete-Krachi have not had stable electricity supply to carry out their daily activities.
Shop owners, restaurant operators, and other small businesses have been particularly hit hard by the power outages.
They have had to either depend on generators or close their shops.
The situation has lead to a threat by the Krachi Municipal Government Hospital to close down the mortuary and other departments if the power outages persists.
In an interview with Asaase news, residents and business owners expressed their debt gain due to the power outages limiting their means of making revenue.
Nusienyo Adzoyi, a fruit seller said that most of her fruits need to be refridgerated and due to the power outages it has significantly affected her business.
A fashion designer also speaking on his situation said, “I have had to just depend on my hand sewing machine which is sometimes not fast enough to meet our daily targets. In a day we could sew 10 or more outfits but now with the power outages we don’t sew up to five.”
Other residents have said that despite numerous complaints to NEDCo, the power outages still continue to affect the town.
Youth in the area have embarked on demonstrations to express their frustrations, calling for immediate action to be taken to ensure they have consistent power supply in the area.
Nana Mprah Besemuna of Krachi Traditional Council, in the same vein expressed deep concern about the persistent power outages which is affecting businesses in the area.
He highlighted the negative impact these outages are having on the local economy, with many businesses struggling to operate effectively due to the lack of reliable electricity.
Nana Besemuna called on the government to urgently address the issue and provide a sustainable solution to the power outages.
