Nyinahin-Kasotie residents demand police protection after deadly mining clash

Residents of Nyinahin-Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region are urgently calling for increased police presence and protection after a violent clash between miners and armed individuals left one dead and six others injured.

The incident, which occurred on Monday (17 December), has sparked fear and concern among local community members, who are now demanding stronger security measures to prevent further violence.

Samuel Ayine, the Assembly Member for the Kyekyewere Electoral Area, a group of armed men arrived at a local mining site, attempting to seize gold deposits and take control of mining operations. The confrontation escalated when the armed group tampered with mining equipment, prompting miners to alert the community.

This led to a violent clash, with gunshots fired during the altercation, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. The injured are receiving medical attention at the Mankranso Government Hospital, while the deceased’s body has been sent to the morgue.

Residents, who have witnessed similar incidents of violent encroachments on mining sites, are now pleading with authorities to provide them with protection. Two suspects have been arrested and are currently in police custody, but local leaders stress that the situation calls for long-term solutions to ensure the safety of miners and residents.
