It was never to disrespect the president—Kofi Buah reflects on his SONA remarks

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Kofi Buah, the Minister-Designate for Lands and Natural Resources, faced scrutiny over his remarks made during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered by President Akufo-Addo.

His comments about the outgoing administration were met with criticism, and in an exchange with his colleague, Annoh-Dompreh, the MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Buah was called to account for his words.

Annoh-Dompreh, who was present during the vetting, took Buah to task, highlighting the tone of his remarks about President Akufo-Addo’s tenure, especially considering the President’s significant achievements, such as the Free SHS initiative.

He asked Buah if, with the benefit of hindsight, he would reconsider his earlier words, which seemed harsh on the outgoing President.

In response, Buah expressed deep respect for President Akufo-Addo, acknowledging the difficult decisions any sitting president must make.

He clarified that while his intention was never to disrespect the President, his comments were meant to reflect the views of Ghanaians who had experienced hardships under the previous government.

“I have enormous respect for President Akufo-Addo, any president that will occupy the highest seat of our land because the decisions they have confronted are enormous and grave,” Buah explained. “As Deputy Majority Leader, I had a duty that day, and I believe those were words that resonated with the people of Ghana.”

Buah went on to express regret if his words were perceived as disrespectful, insisting that his goal was to highlight the government’s shortcomings, not attack the President personally.

He acknowledged the good that had been done during the administration but emphasized the hardships that many Ghanaians were still facing, which influenced his remarks.

“Yes, obviously, there were very good things that were done, and we can talk about that,” Buah said. “But I was reflecting the views of the people of Ghana who felt they had gone through so much hardship.”
