North East Region: Kpasenkpe STEM SHS flooded after torrential downpour

A torrential downpour in parts of the North East Region has left Kpasenkpe STEM Senior High School in the West Mamprusi Municipality flooded, bringing academic activities to a standstill.

The rain, which lasted over four hours on Monday (12 August 2024) caused water from a nearby rice valley to overflow onto the school premises.

Before an excavator was brought in to divert the water, students in school had to be urged to stop academic activities and leave their classrooms to go and dig the road to allow the water to flow to the other side of the school.

Authorities attribute the flooding to the lack of adequate culverts on the road.

Headmaster of the STEM School, Amadu Mamudu Delwende Timbilla, said that the school has faced flooding challenges since its inception.

“This is not the first time that we had this flooding in this school. The flooding has been in the school since 2022 even before they handed over to us,” the headmaster said.

He emphasised that teaching and learning will continue to suffer if culverts are not constructed to facilitate water flow during rainfall.

“Provided the culverts are not constructed, if we should experience such a torrential rainfall and nothing is being done about the culverts, automatically, it will affect teaching and  learning.”

North East Regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria, who visited the school, described the situation as disturbing and problematic.

“Flooding in Kpasenkpe, particularly the STEM Senior High, has been an annual problem, that is very disturbing and worrying.”

“We are looking at the contingency from a two point approach, the first is that the contractor working on the road has been tasked with introducing a number of relief culverts that will carry a volume of water to the other side of the road,” he said.
